Highlights from the Archive #1

While the good folks at WVPE are using the Chronicles broadcast time this week to build up the station’s membership list, we’d like to offer a sampler of highlights from the archive.  Don’t forget to support the station—thanks.

Joe Chaney

The Lonely Game—Golf etiquette doesn’t permit players to taunt one another. Apparently the Scottish developed the game around that principle because misfortune is always just over the next rise for any player. And your bad luck adds up, it accumulates. It doesn’t do to dwell on it. There is no forgiveness in the game of golf, and so there has to be pity.

Louise Collins

Michiana Car Culture—My biggest difficulty in learning to drive was that I regard cars as alien and potentially lethal: tin boxes hurtling towards each other at excessive speeds. The second problem was convincing my instructor that I didn’t already know how to drive.

Jonathan Nashel

Women’s Football Comes to Michiana—There was tremendous camaraderie among the players, some great gang tackling, a few late hits, referees who needed new eyeglasses, a crazy announcer, a concession stand that aimed to please, an amazing halftime show involving dogs chasing frisbees....all and all, this was entertainment of a very high order.

April Lidinsky

Why I Want To Do the Splits—Sometimes, before class, women will watch while a man is working himself over on the leg-stretcher, tears standing in his eyes, and she’ll give him a look like, “Yeah, that’s what giving birth is like . .. to the millionth power! Baby.”

Ken Smith

Watching the Firefighters—There were six firefighters, three in the bleachers with the crowd and three standing on the basketball court with their yellow safety gear set up on the floor around them. At the end they took questions from the students about how heavy the suits are, how hot the air is inside a burning house, why they chop a hole in the roof, and how they protect themselves from heat and flames.
