David Kline on service. In an interview with Jane Genova, David Kline suggests that the narcissistic rush of the blogosphere may be replaced someday by a more outward-looking attitude:

After bloggers master the fundamentals of this new medium, they will come to value belonging more than hearing themselves talk. Also, this sense of being a member of something bigger than themselves will drive them to shape their postings to be of service.

My conversations this week with student bloggers make me think that an attitude of service is not so remote a possibility for many of today's young writers. An attitude of service to readers helps a writer know what and how to write, find a satisfying community, and make something personal that is also larger than himself or herself.

Kline and Dan Burstein wrote the book Blog!, which was published last month. It contains many interviews with "A-list" bloggers on the state and role of blogging today. [0 & P]
